Frequently Asked Questions

Why are appointments only for 30 minutes?

According to many experts, learning happens in 20 minute segments. This is why sessions are only 30 minutes. It includes a few extra minutes for greetings and farewells. In a more traditional classroom setting, you would begin by watching a video together and then discussing it. This would be a one-hour class. But the method works best when a coach isn’t familiar with the topic in advance. Coaches ask better questions when they don’t know the material. When clients are responsible to explain the ideas more clearly, they get more out of the practice. So the first half of the practice (watching a video) is better done solo. Think of it as a one-hour practice. 30 minutes to prepare and 30 minutes to talk. And this way, you don’t have to pay the coach to watch the video with you.

What level of English do I need to start Glish sessions?

Most clients are at the intermediate level or above. This means you can read and write in English and you’re ready to start applying your knowledge in real conversations.

If I cancel a session, do I get a refund?

There are no refunds. If you cancel a session 24 hours in advance, you may reschedule it at no charge.

How long will it take to improve my English fluency?

Using the Glish method to prepare for each conversation, you can expect to find it becoming much easier to converse by the fourth session. The more you practice, and prepare, the more fluent you become, so it’s really up to you.

I'm preparing for the IELTS/TOEFL oral test. Can you help me?

Yes. Alice, a client in China had been using traditional study guides, without success, to get their TOEFL score high enough to qualify for top level universities. Their score seemed to plateau at 23, but they needed a 25. After ten sessions using the Glish method and TED talks, they took the exam and received a score of 26. Real conversations are the key to fluency.

Is this conversation confidential?

Conversations are private. A coach will not share your story without your permission. Glish mentions this in our code of conduct.

"Don’t gossip. If it’s not your story to tell, get permission."

What if I can't find the words and end up feeling a failure?

Everyone feels this way (really). Fear is the biggest reason people don’t practice speaking English. Glish coaches are trained to be patient and friendly. They don’t mind waiting for you to search your memory, or use a dictionary. They aren’t judging you or evaluating your skills. Try to relax and not think about doing it “right”. Just try to communicate your idea, even if you have to use your hands and gestures to communicate meaning.

How do I figure out time zones for coaches?

There is a pull down menu on each calendar labeled “Time Zone”. Choose your own time zone and you’ll see the schedule in your own time zone.

What happens when technical difficulties make the session impossible?

You can reschedule your appointment at no charge. Ask your coach for a reschedule code.
